Why Financial Independence Is Not About Retiring Early

When I decided to step away from my corporate career, it was not because I had a master plan to become financially independent. It was not a strategic move to retire early.

In fact, just a few months before I quit, I believed the exact opposite. I thought what I needed was a better-paying job with more responsibility. I believed that with a higher salary, all my problems would be solved.

But my body told me otherwise. I was on the wrong path, heading straight for burnout. I had to take a step back.

While I was at home taking care of my children, my wife and I analysed our finances. We realised that almost eighty percent of my salary was going toward extra daycare and the hidden costs of maintaining such a busy, stressful life. Me staying home did not actually impact our net income as much as we thought it would.

That period of stepping back changed everything. It taught me a fundamental truth that most people misunderstand: financial independence is not about retiring early. It is about something much more powerful.

The Real Cause of Burnout

While I was at home, I started educating myself. I read books on personal development and learned how money actually works.

The first thing I realised was that I did not know myself well enough. That was why I had ended up on a path that led to burnout.

Most people think burnout comes from working too hard. That is not entirely true. You fall into burnout because you are putting your energy into something that is not aligned with your core values. When you work hard at something that contradicts your inner goals, it drains your energy completely.

But when you are doing something you are passionate about — something aligned with your life’s purpose — you can work incredibly hard without burning out.

I needed to find a way to create income that aligned with my values, rather than just trading my time for a paycheck in a system that drained me.

Building Systems for Flexibility

I started by building an online business. I was introduced to the idea of creating income in a “passive” way.

Let me be clear: it is never totally passive at the beginning. You have to learn the skills, build the systems, and maintain them. But once those systems are running, they can generate income without requiring you to be at a desk from nine to five every day.

The moment I found a way to create income while working the hours I chose, a huge burden lifted off my shoulders.

That was when I realised the true goal. The goal was never to stop working. The goal was flexibility.

What Financial Independence Actually Means

Financial independence is having the choice of whether you want to work today or not.

If you prefer to put your time and energy into something else — like your family, your health, or a passion project — you can. Eventually, you still have to put effort into your business or your investments. You have to stay informed, reallocate assets, and manage your portfolio. But when and how long you work becomes your choice.

If I decide to work on a Sunday morning instead of a Tuesday afternoon, that is my choice. If it is my mother’s birthday and she needs me, I can just go and be with her, because that is the most important thing to do on that day. I can always work another day.

Being financially independent means you are not dependent on a salary. You are not dependent on an employer. My investments are divided across different asset classes, meaning no single institution has control over my financial future.

That is what gives me freedom. That is what gives me peace of mind.

The “Retirement” Illusion

Many people look at my life now and say, “You are already retired.”

But I am working hard. The difference is that the flexibility we created allowed us to completely change our way of life. We are slow-traveling with our family, spending weeks or months at a time in different places. We are homeschooling our kids because we want to spend this period of their lives together, rather than handing their education over to the school system right now.

My wife figured out a way to work just a few hours a week from anywhere in the world. We manage our investments from abroad.

You could call it retiring early, but it is not. We are simply prioritising quality time with our children while they are young.

When our kids are older and independent, I will probably start working much more. But I will only work on things I am passionate about — things that help me grow as a person, rather than things I have to do just to pay the bills.

Financial independence is not about stopping work. It is about having the peace of mind to make choices based on what is truly important in life, without money dictating your decisions.
