The Freedom of Having More Options Than Obligations

A couple walking along a wooded path towards a calm lake beneath soft September clouds in Denmark.

Yesterday, my wife and I were walking through the Danish countryside. Our path had carried us down through the woods towards the water. Then the trees opened and we saw a series of small lakes, still and unfamiliar, beneath dramatic September clouds.

It was the kind of quiet that makes you notice what is happening inside you.

As we walked, we began talking about the years when our children were very young. Our lives were full of work, family, and social commitments. Every part of life mattered. We were doing our best to be good parents, good partners, reliable colleagues, and present friends.

But together, all those responsibilities became so full that we often felt we had no real choice. We were being led by what needed to be done instead of by our own priorities or what we truly wanted our life to become.

Nothing was wrong with caring for our family, working hard, or showing up for the people around us. The difficult part was that we had become very good at responding to every demand, and much less good at asking whether the direction still belonged to us.

Standing there beside the water, I could feel how different life is now.

I could choose not to work today. I could choose not to work tomorrow. And the life we have built would not fall apart because of it.

That does not mean I have no responsibilities. It means my responsibilities no longer own every part of me.

For me, that is one of the deepest forms of financial freedom: having more options than obligations.

When responsibility starts leading

There was a time when I thought freedom meant having no obligations at all. No pressure. No deadlines. No one expecting anything from me.

I do not see it that way anymore.

A life without responsibility would not feel meaningful to me. I like building things. I like learning. I like taking care of the people I love. I like having a reason to get up and create.

The problem is not responsibility itself. The problem is when every responsibility feels fixed, urgent, and impossible to move. When there is no room to respond if life changes. When your bills, your schedule, your fear, or other people’s expectations have already decided every part of your day.

That is what those years with young children sometimes felt like for us. We loved our family life, but we had not created enough space to choose it consciously. Most days were already spoken for before they began.

Having options is not an escape from life. It is a calmer way of meeting it.

It is being able to say yes to something important without immediately panicking about what it will cost you. It is being able to say no to an opportunity that looks good from the outside but does not fit the life you want. It is being able to rest when your body is asking for rest.

That is not the same as doing nothing. It is choosing what deserves your energy.

Four days at a different pace

Last week, I did not work in the way I normally do for four days.

There were still things on my mind. Slowing down does not make life perfect, and it does not remove every question or stress. But I noticed that I was relaxed.

I could walk with my wife. I could be outside. I could let a conversation take the time it needed. I could follow a path simply because it looked interesting and see a part of the landscape I had never seen before.

When we are always busy, stopping can feel uncomfortable. The mind keeps running even when the body finally has space to rest. It takes a while to return to yourself.

But that space is not empty. It is where I begin to hear what I actually think and feel.

Those four days were not about escaping work. They reminded me that I do not want to build a life where I can only enjoy myself after everything is finished.

Because nothing is ever completely finished.

There will always be another task, another goal, another improvement to make. If I wait until all obligations disappear, I may wait my whole life before I allow myself to enjoy the view.

I want to work with focus, but I also want to step back with peace. I want to create, but I also want to simply be.

Building options before I need them

The freedom to take a walk on a Tuesday morning is not created on Tuesday morning. It is built slowly, through choices made long before that day arrives.

For us, that has meant becoming more deliberate about commitments and more careful about what we allow to take up all of our time and energy. It has meant building a life where work, money, and responsibility can support our priorities rather than constantly decide them for us.

None of this is a perfect formula. Every family has different risks, resources, and responsibilities. What creates freedom for one person may not create it for another.

Still, there is one question I find useful when I am making a bigger decision:

Does this give me more options in the future, or fewer?

Some obligations are worth taking on. A family commitment, a meaningful project, a home, a business, or an investment can ask more from us for a time. The point is not to avoid every commitment. It is to choose them consciously.

I have learned there is a difference between accepting an obligation because it fits the life I want and accepting one simply because it is what everyone else seems to be doing.

The first may stretch me, but it can still make me stronger. The second can quietly close doors I did not realise I was closing.

The freedom to live the day I am in

I love being able to work from a different place for a while. I love discovering a new forest, a new path, a new beach, or a small place I would never have seen if every week had to look exactly the same.

These moments are not separate from the work of building wealth. They are part of the reason I do it.

We sometimes speak about financial freedom as though it is a distant finish line: a number we will reach one day, after which life can finally begin. I see it differently now.

Financial freedom is also the ability to enjoy the life I have while I am still building. It is making room for a walk, a conversation, a change of scenery, or a quiet morning when I need one.

I wrote earlier about why creating time was the best investment I ever made. This feels like the next part of that lesson. Creating time matters. But having the freedom to choose what I do with that time matters too.

The goal is not a life with no obligations. The goal is a life where my obligations do not leave me with no choice.

I still want to grow. I still want to create. I still want to take responsibility for the life I am building.

But I also want to look up, see the sun coming through the clouds, and know that I have the freedom to stay there for a moment.

That is a kind of wealth I do not want to lose.
