The Hidden Cost of Waiting for the Right Moment to Change Your Life

# The Hidden Cost of Waiting for the Right Moment to Change Your Life

Most people are waiting. They are waiting for the right time, the right amount of money, the right circumstances, or the right sign to finally make a change. They know they are in a situation that no longer serves them—a career that drains them, a lifestyle that feels empty, or a routine that leaves no room for peace—but they convince themselves that if they just hold on a little longer, the perfect moment will arrive.

The truth is, the perfect moment never arrives. And while you are waiting for it, you are paying a price that is far higher than you realise. The cost of waiting is not just financial. It is the days, months, and years of your life that pass while you stay in a situation that is quietly breaking you down.

## The Illusion of the Perfect Solution

When I was working as an engineering manager, I reached a point where I knew something was deeply wrong. I had achieved the success I had planned for. I had a family with three young boys, a good salary, and a career that looked perfect from the outside. But internally, I was exhausted. I felt like my time and energy were not going to the right place. I was trying to give 100% to my job and 100% to my family, and it was simply too much.

Crazy enough, my first reaction to feeling burned out was not to step back. It was to look for a *better* job. I thought that if I could just get a higher salary, I could pay for more help at home—a babysitter, someone to help with the household—so I could focus more on my work without the stress of managing everything else. I spent months looking for that higher-paying job. I even went to interviews. But somehow, I never got those jobs. Looking back, I realise that people could probably see I was on the verge of a burnout, even if I couldn’t see it myself.

I was waiting for a solution that would allow me to keep running in the same system, just with slightly better shock absorbers. I never made the decision to stop. Eventually, my body made the decision for me. I hit a severe burnout and was forced to take a break.

## The Real Price of Staying Too Long

When I look back at that period, the cost of waiting was immense. The most obvious cost was my health. I was living an incredibly unhealthy lifestyle—working too much, sleeping too little, drinking too much coffee, and carrying a huge amount of stress.

But the deeper cost was to my relationships. When you are running on empty, you do not have the capacity to be truly present. You cannot be the partner or the parent you want to be. All relationships go through ups and downs, and working on your relationship with your spouse or your children requires time and attention. If you are trying to do that alongside a highly stressful, demanding daily life, the chances of building a successful, deep connection long-term are very low.

The highest cost of waiting for the right moment is time. It is the time you could have spent building a life of peace, a life of choice, a life where you have the possibility to be present. Your health and your relationships are, at the end of the day, the most important things you have. If you do not create the space to nurture them, no amount of career success will compensate for their loss.

## Making the Leap Before You Are Ready

After a couple of weeks off, I tried to go back to work. I was supposed to take it easy and build up slowly, but within two weeks, I was right back in the exact same rhythm, the same stress, and the same routine. That was the moment I realised the only way out was to quit.

When my boss asked me what I was going to do, I told him the truth: “I don’t know.” I had some savings, but I had no clear plan. He told me I wasn’t allowed to quit without a plan. But I knew that what I was doing was not the right thing. So I quit anyway, knowing only that I was going to stay home and figure it out from there.

Looking back, it sounds like a great idea because everything turned out okay. I started an online business, we redesigned our lives, and we built true financial freedom. But in that moment, nothing was clear. It was terrifying. I was risking the savings I had built up over years. The path was completely uncertain. But I had to trust that it was for the best.

## The Power of Creating Space

What I learned from that experience is that you cannot figure out your next move while you are still running on the treadmill. You need to make the time and space in your head to be able to think straight and make the right decisions.

If someone had told me earlier, “Patrick, you know you are on the wrong track. Your goal in life is not to be a successful manager. Your goal is much deeper, and you need time, space, and peace of mind to find out what that is,” I might have made the choice sooner. I would have made the decision before I got sick.

Building wealth also takes time. The sooner you start, the more time you have to let compounding do its work. But you cannot build true wealth—or a life by design—if you are entirely consumed by a situation that drains you. The younger you are when you make changes, the easier it is. But regardless of your age, the sooner you create the time and space to work on yourself, your health, and your relationships, the sooner you can start building the life you actually deserve.

Stop waiting for the perfect moment. It does not exist. The only moment you have is right now. Make the choice, create the space, and trust that you will figure it out along the way.
